P114 - Problem set #2

For week of January 24, 2000

This is one of the tougher weeks of material. These problems require visualization of symmetry, fictitious surfaces, and "flux". This whole section can be extremely difficult at first … once you get the hang of it, you’ll find the problems are typically not so bad, i.e., easy to execute once you see what to do. Prior to getting the hang of it, they verge on impossible. The more difficult ones are generally more difficult because the execution involves the need to see a surprising symmetry or set up and evaluate an integral. They usually come with one of three types of symmetry: spherical, cylindrical, and planar. You’ll want to know how to recognize and do each type. Unlike much of what we’ve done in P113, there is little middle ground in this topic. You either get it or you don’t.

You can see my thoughts on these problems on the web. I will no longer include my comments with the assignment or the workshop because often they would constitute a hint. It would be better for you to look at them on the web after you work on the problem set.
