P114 - Workshop/Recitation Module 3
Electrostatics: Electric potential, capacitors, energy
Tipler 24-84
Electric potential, conservation of energy, charged particle kinematics
The student should know what the potential function of each sphere looks like.
They should understand that potential is work/unit charge.
Make sure they see that one uses conservation of energy rather than some complicated integral to solve this.
Tipler 25-37
Capacitors
Student should understand the concept of a capacitor, and how capacitance relates to charge and potential.
Student should know how capacitors add in series and in parallel in electric circuits.
Student should understand what is meant by breakdown voltage
Tipler 25-77
Electrical energy
Student should understand how charge, capacitance, voltage, and energy are related.
They should understand that capacitance is a purely geometrical quantity, i.e., if the geometry changes, the capacitance changes.
